Doman Flashcards: Quantity
The quantity cards are the first step in the Doman plan.
Instead of introducing numerals to the child, introduce cards with dots that represent the quantity that you want to explore. Over time, they’ll see the pattern between the dots and understand quantities and their names. Simple, eh?
Here’s their recommended strategy -
- 2 sets of cards (5 cards each; starting 1-5 and 6-10)
- Show one set of cards at a time – called a session
- Each session should be brief – 1 second per card; 5 seconds total
- Do 3 sessions per set each day
- Introduce 2 new cards a day (remove lowest cards, add higher cards)
- So each card should last 15 sessions (5 days at 3 sessions each) – Note, yes some early cards don’t last that long…
The guiding principle, which I think is true no matter what you are teaching (subject matter, or species even – as we learned this principle while training our dog):
Always stop before your child wants to stop.
Ready?
Click here to start your first session. If you need a hint of how many dots there are, it’s in faint grey in the upper left corner.
Make the window as big as you can, to help make the dots that much easier to see. It will also eliminate any other distractions on the screen.
The book says to go up to 100 dots. We’re not sure we want to do that. And our monitors aren’t big enough. But we also don’t want to pressure Sal into becoming a little Rainman. We’d like for him not to freak people out. So these flashcards end at 60. Feel free though, to let us know if you think it should be higher (at the cost of smaller dots).
